Why choose a STEM career?

Without scientists, technology innovators, engineers, mathematicians the things we take for granted every day would not be possible and our dreams for the future wouldn’t be possible either.

By studying STEM (science, technology, engineering and maths) subjects you have the opportunity to find a job in a range of interesting and exciting areas – the possibilities are endless!

Should you pursue a career in STEM? Answer yes to one or more of these questions below:

  • Are you curious about how the world works?
  • Are you good at making things?
  • Do you wonder how things are built?
  • Do you like solving problems?
  • Are you interested in technology?

How do I know what career to pick?

If you already have a favourite area, whether its science, technology, engineering or maths, that’s great! But if you’re not sure which you prefer, it can be hard to decide which GCSEs or A-Levels to study.

You have lots of options:

  • Chemistry
  • Biology
  • Physics
  • Statistics
  • Maths
  • Design Technology

Choosing these subjects doesn’t mean you can’t be creative. Additional subjects such as Art and Design can also be beneficial to a STEM career.

Once you finish school there are plenty of options to kick start your future career, including graduate schemes and apprenticeships. Speak with a school careers advisor to find out more.
